6th grade students will begin with an introduction to the design elements of the new building and greenhouse complex. Students will be actively engaged in the daily operation of a multifaceted year- round food production system. 6th grade students will also operate a school-wide composting system and recycling operation. Students will begin studies of integrated system design and passive solar design, and also begin work on developing energy budgets for the net-zero solar electric goals for the building. Annual and perennial plant propagation techniques will be featured as we develop the new garden systems around the building. Students will also spend time in the kitchen and learn food safety, nutrition and basic cooking skills while examining a variety of ethnic cooking styles. Students will understand seasonally appropriate tasks for food systems. Links will be built to support 6th Grade Core Content Standards in Science and Math and students will use applied math and reading skills to solve real world problems.
