    If you are unable to attend the In-service, please stop by the Human Resources Office AFTER August 30 to pick up an application packet or update your information for the 2017/18 school year if you are a returning substitute. 

    Hood River County School District is seeking to hire Substitutes for the following job categories:

     Custodial – Substitutes.  Pay is $11.00/hour

    Custodial Substitutes provide coverage for absent Regular Custodial/Maintenance staff.  Assignments are typically during after school and evening hours.  Some weekend assignments may also be available.  

    Kitchen Helper – Substitutes.  Pay is $11.00/hour

    Kitchen Helper Substitutes assist in any of the school kitchens.  Duties include food preparation, serving and dishwashing.  Assignments are typically 2-4 hours in length and are in the early morning or mid-morning on school days.  Kitchen Helper Substitutes need to possess an Oregon Food Handlers certificate. 

    Prime Time Assistant – Substitutes.  Pay is $11.00/hour

    Prime Time Assistant Substitutes work school days at May Street, Westside and Mid Valley Elementary Schools, after school (approximately 2:10 PM) until 5:30 PM.  Duties include assisting the Site Director with running activities, student supervision, snack preparation and clean-up, and homework.  Supervision includes both large group and smaller group activities. 

    Preschool Assistant – Substitutes.  Pay is $11.00/hour

    Preschool Assistant Substitutes work school days at the Preschools at Hood River Valley High School, Westside Elementary and Mid Valley Elementary Schools.  Assignments vary but are between 7:15 AM and 4:45 PM depending on the needs of the program. 

    Instructional Assistant – Substitutes.  Pay is $11.00/hour

    Instructional Assistant Substitutes work in a variety of capacities, assisting a classroom teacher and providing supervision and instruction to individual students and groups.  Assignments can range from general classroom support to providing assistance to an individual student needing specific one-on-one support.  Some assignments might be in a high needs or Structured Learning Center environment.  Instructional Assistant Substitutes are needed at all schools in the district. 

    Bus Driver Substitutes.  Pay is $14.69/hour

    Substitute Bus Drivers must be 18 years or older, have a clean driving record, and enjoy interacting with school age students.  HRCSD will provide the behind-the-wheel training and assistance in obtaining a CDL and Bus Driver Certification.  Substitute Bus Drivers work on-call, as needed.    

     

     

    How to Become a Substitute

     To work as a substitute, contact the District Human Resources Office at 541/387-5012 to schedule an appointment.
     
    To work as a licensed or classified substitute in our school district, applicants must complete a substitute employment packet and complete our mandatory training.  Applicants should be ready to present identifications verifying eligibility to work in the United States as required on the I-9 form.   A licensed substitute must have a valid Oregon Teaching License issued by the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission.

     Licensed Substitutes

    The daily rate of pay for licensed substitutes for the 2017-18 school year is $178.35 for a full day and $89.18 for a half day.  For long term assignments that last for longer than 10 consecutive days, the rate beginning on the 11th and subsequent day increases to $201.55/day.  

     Classified Substitutes
     
    Classified substitute assignments include: clerical, custodial, food service, instructional assistant, library assistant, Preschool and Prime Time assistants.  All classified substitutes are required to successfully complete a fingerprint-based criminal history verification.  You will need to have your fingerprint card completed at a Fieldprint location (closest is in The Dalles).  Pick up a blank fingerprint card at the District Office. 
     
    The cost of the State-mandated fingerprint verification is $59, payable to Hood River County School District by the applicant, and due at the time you sign up to become a substitute. This fee is non-refundable.  We will only accept the exact amount in cash or check. 
     
    Classified Substitutes are paid $11.00 hour.  Bus Driver Substitutes are paid $14.69/hour.  

    Bus Driver Substitutes

    To become a Bus Driver Substitute, the following criteria is required:

    • Must be at least 21 years old.
    • Must have a clean driving record
    • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s license (training provided by the District)
    • Must possess or have the ability to obtain an ODE Bus Driver Certification (training provided by the District)
    • Must possess or have the ability to readily obtain a First Aid certification
    • Must be able to pass a finger-print based criminal history verification.
    • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position.
    • Pay is $14.69 per hour for the 2016/17 school year.

    Applicants must complete a substitute Bus Driver employment packet.  This packet is available at the Human Resources Office, 1011 Eugene Street, Hood River, OR  97031.

    Also, Bus Driver Substitutes must complete annual trainings, currently including the following: Child Abuse Mandatory Reporting, Bloodborne Pathogens, Preventing Sexual Harassment in Schools, Bullying, and Sexual Misconduct.  Substitutes hired by the district will also need to present identification verifying your eligibility to work in the United States as required on the I-9 form.
     

     AESOP 

    Our district utilizes an automated substitute calling system called AESOP (Automated Educational Systems Operator).  When utilized by the schools, the system contacts active and available substitutes for teacher and classified staff replacements.  School personnel may also personally contact substitutes to fill assignments.   Substitutes for custodial, food service and bus driving assignments are personally contacted by school personnel.  Please visit www.aesoponline.com for an overview of the system.
