To work as a licensed or classified substitute in our school district, applicants must complete a substitute employment packet and complete our annual mandatory training.  Applicants should be prepared to present identification verifying eligibility to work in the United States as required on the I-9 form.   A licensed substitute must have a valid Oregon Teaching License issued by the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission.  Substitutes should have a high school diploma or GED equivalent, in addition to any specific licensing requirements for the postion they are applying for. All substitutes must provide proof of COVID 19 vaccination.

    Licensed Substitutes

    The daily rate of pay for licensed substitutes for the 2021-22 school year is $195.87 for a full day (over 4 hours) and $97.94 for a half day (up to 4 hours).  For long term assignments that last for longer than 10 consecutive days, the rate beginning on the 11th and subsequent day increases to $245.42/day.  

    Classified Substitutes

    Classified substitute assignments include: secretary/clerical, custodial, food service, instructional assistant, library assistant, paraprofessionals.  All classified substitutes are required to successfully complete a fingerprint-based criminal history verification.  You will need to have your fingerprints processed at a Fieldprint location (closest is in The Dalles).  The District will pay the $72.00 fingerprinting/background check fee.   

    Bus Driver Substitutes

    To become a Bus Driver Substitute, the following criteria is required:

    • Must be at least 21 years old
    • Must have a clean driving record
    • Must possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s license (training provided by the District)
    • Must possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain an ODE Bus Driver Certification (training provided by the District)
    • Must possess or have the ability to readily obtain and maintain a First Aid certification
    • Must be able to pass a finger-print based criminal history verification
    • Must be able to meet and maintain the physical demands of the position 
    • Pay for Substitute Bus Drivers is $18.26/hour for the 2021/22 school year
    • Provide proof of COVID 19 vaccination to Human Resources

    Our district utilizes an automated substitute calling system called AESOP (Automated Educational Systems Operator).  When utilized by the schools, the system contacts active and available substitutes for teacher and classified staff replacements.  School personnel may also personally contact substitutes to fill assignments.   Substitutes for custodial, food service and bus driving assignments are personally contacted by school personnel.  Please visit www.aesoponline.com for an overview of the system.
