    Major Concepts/Content: Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a year-long academic elective course that prepares students for college readiness and success. In AVID, students participate in activities that incorporate strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading to support their academic growth. Participating in AVID is an honor and privilege, therefore certain requirements must be met in order to remain in the program.

     

    • Students will focus on learning skills to support successful completion of all academic classes.
    • Students will complete research on the following topics: colleges, careers of interest, financial sustainability based on their goals for life.

    Materials Needed for Class

    • 3 Inch, 3 Ring Binder with 8 Dividing Tabs
    • Lined Notebook Paper
    • Pens (black, blue, red), Pencils, and brick Eraser
    • Highlighters in different colors
    • Pencil Pouch
    • Calendar (a.k.a. your “Life”) – it will be checked often and should include all academic due dates, study sessions, assignment deadlines, and extracurricular activities

     

    Grading

    • Your grade in this class is based on a simple percentage of total points possible. (see below)
    • Late work will NOT be accepted. Period.
    • If you have a prearranged absence, all your missing work must be turned in before you leave or upon the day of your return to class. No exceptions.

    A

    The student has a fully utilized planner, fully completed all TRFs on time, surpassed all expectations for binder checks, completed 6 hours of community service, and received an A on all in-class work.

    89-80

    B

    The student has used their planner most of the time, completed all TRFs on time, met all expectations for binder checks, completed 6 hours of community service, and received a B or better on all in-class work.

    79-70

    C

    The student has occasionally used their planner, completed 75% of TRFs on time, met 75% expectations for binder checks, completed 4 or more hours of community service, and received a C or better on all in-class work.

    69-60

    D

    The student has rarely used their planner, completed 65% of TRFs on time, met 65% expectations for binder checks, completed 2 or more hours of community service, and received a D or better on all in-class work and will be put on probation next semester.


    59 below

    F

    The student has not met a sufficient number of course objectives to pass a minimum level and receives no credit and will be removed from the AVID program.  

    * A final failing grade in any class automatically removes a student from the AVID program.

     

    AVID 10 Semester Expectations to maintain your earned place in AVID

    1. Maintain a 2.5 GPA, no F grades on transcripts (semester grades) 
    2. Complete 10 hours of community service
    3. Be involved in one afterschool activity

     

    Classroom Expectations:

    1. ATTENDANCE - Personal electronics (phone) will be put in a class pocket organizer for the entire period. Phones in the assigned pocket will be used for attendance. (phone in pocket = present in class, no phone in pocket = absent).
    2. Complete and Turn in Assignments on Time:  Late work will NOT be accepted.  
    3. Study:  Studying is investing in your future success. Hard work pays off.
    4. Keep an Open Mind: Respect others’ feelings and ideas.
    5. Have Fun:  Enjoy your time in this class, and enjoy the time you get to spend with your AVID family.



    As AVID students you will be held at a higher level of expectation than average students.
