• Academics at May Street Elementary School

studentAt May Street Elementary, we are focused on building relationships, valuing all learners, and holding students to high standards. To accomplish our goals, educators collaborate in grade-level teams to examine student achievement data, inform instructional practices and improve student learning. Core instruction in math and reading uses research-based curriculum. Multi-tiered interventions are provided for students who need additional support. We partner with our parents to find ways to boost school attendance.

    Academic Experience

All students at May Street receive 90 minutes of daily reading instruction and 60 minutes of daily math instruction. Students receive an additional 30 minutes of enrichment or intervention in the areas of math and reading. Students receive a 40 minute block of Physical Education, Music, or Library/Tech each day. Students receive 60 minutes per week of Science and Social Studies instruction. Art experiences are built into the core curriculum and our students participate in art residencies throughout the school year.

    Social Emotional Learning

studentOur school strives to ensure all students and their families feel safe and welcome. We use Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), a research-backed approach to developing students’ academic, social, emotional and behavioral competence. We frequently teach expectations and recognize positive behavior. Our students participate in a Morning Meeting each day along with additional SEL learning units throughout the school year.
