Special Education (6th, 7th & 8th Grade)
The goal of the Special Education Department as mandated by the Federal Government is to provide instruction to students with a variety of handicaps in the “least restrictive environment.” Depending on the individual student’s particular abilities, the “least restrictive environment” may vary from a total pullout program to a completely mainstreamed program in which the student attends regular classes exclusively.
The program provides each student with the opportunity to derive maximum benefit from instruction in a setting with minimum isolation from non-handicapped peers. Instructors in the Special Education Department work closely with regular classroom teachers to accomplish this goal.Instructional assistants are an integral part of this program. They supply additional one-on-one support in both pullout and mainstreamed classes. The intent is to provide students with maximum skill development and classroom support.
