Health education: Grades kindergarten through fifth grade

In the Hood River County School District, we are committed to providing families with clear information about our state-required health education standards (Oregon Health Education Standards).  In grades kindergarten through fifth-grade, we use the instructional resource, The Great Body Shop, to meet these standards.  We believe that it is essential for families to understand the content students are learning, and we also recognize that families may have varying perspectives on the state health standards.

The curriculum, delivered through The Great Body Shop, is fully aligned with Oregon's state health education standards. Lessons are designed to:

  • Enhance student knowledge
  • Promote healthy decision-making
  • Reduce risky behaviors later in life

We recognize that parents and guardians are their child’s primary health educators.

Throughout The Great Body Shop, there are occasional discussions on potentially sensitive issues. Families have the right to preview the health curriculum and may choose to opt their student out of specific lessons, in accordance with Oregon law.

The district opt-out letters that have been sent out this fall will provide instructions and forms for families wishing to exclude their student(s) from these lessons.
