HRCSD makes gains in English Language Arts, math, and science

On September 24, 2026, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) released results from the 2025-26 Oregon Statewide Assessments. Hood River County School District (HRCSD) is demonstrating steady progress in student achievement across all three assessed core subject areas when reviewing overall combined scores from 3rd through 8th and 11th grade:

  • English Language Arts (ELA): Proficiency increased by 2.8%
  • Mathematics: Proficiency increased by 5.5%
  • Science: Proficiency increased by 12.3%

This academic growth across ELA, math, and science stems from intentional shifts in teaching, learning, and student engagement:

  • Writing Across the Curriculum: Students regularly write to explain their thinking and demonstrate learning across all subjects.
  • Early Literacy Focus: Elementary schools prioritize developing readers through curricula and instructional strategies grounded in the science of reading.
  • Data-Driven Instruction: Teachers regularly analyze district and state assessment data to identify student needs and tailor classroom instruction and interventions accordingly.
  • Targeted Support for Multilingual Learners: Utilizing Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) and Sheltered Instruction strategies helps students access rigorous core content while building academic language skills.
  • Integrated Literacy Skills: Instruction intentionally connects speaking, reading, and writing, building students' ability to discuss complex ideas, read deeply, and apply knowledge in their written communication.
  • Engaging Well-Rounded Programming: HRCSD maintains robust enrichment opportunities, from elementary music, PE, media, swimming, art, and STEM activities to a broad slate of secondary electives, advanced STEM, fine arts, and Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways.
  • Social-Emotional Support: Schools provide social-emotional learning resources while fostering safe, inclusive environments where students can thrive both academically and personally.
  • Emphasis on School Attendance: Student attendance rates continue to improve. Last year, 73% of HRCSD students met the regular attendance threshold (attending 90% of school days or better, missing fewer than 17 days overall). Hood River County ranks third among Oregon’s 36 counties in attendance rates.

While celebrating these areas of growth, HRCSD remains focused on continuous improvement. District leaders and staff recognize that work remains to fully return to pre-pandemic proficiency and attendance levels and across all schools.
