Two more years of Safe Routes to School

The school district is proud to announce that we won the Oregon Department of Transportation's (ODOT) Safe Routes to School Education grant for the second time, which extends our coordinator position, held by Megan Ramey, through the fall of 2026. Hood River County also won two grants from ODOT: engineering assistance for Parkdale Elementary and a safe routes planning process for the 6 schools in the county. What began as a humble bike train for May Street Elementary in October 2020, became a full program 2 years later with a Safe Routes to School coalition that has accomplished the following:

  • $10 million or 21 grants won for education, programming and infrastructure
  • 3 demonstration projects for Hood River Middle School, May Street Elementary and Mid Valley Elementary
  • 200+ families have received donated bikes from Anson's Bike Buddies
  • 1800+ students learning bike confidence and safety in PE classes
  • 15 walk and roll to school days for the elementary schools
  • 1 afterschool walking and biking club for 5th-8th graders

To find what is happening with your school, visit www.walkandrollhoodrivercounty.com. When students can walk or roll to school, they are happier, more independent, less anxious and their brains fire on all cylinders. More independent students means caregivers can reclaim their time meaning less cars in the street and reduced air and noise pollution. The result is a quieter, more active, connected and happy community
