Principal's Message

  • Dear Parents,

Our Westside students are pretty excited about having cold water to drink and fill their water bottles, all the while reducing the amount of plastic water bottles students would have used in the future. Over the winter break we were able to install a new water fountain with a water bottle refill station near the fifth grade classrooms. This was made possible because of some ambitious fifth grade students who led a fundraiser by selling Westside Wildcat water bottles to our students and families leading up to the break. Parent, Denice Bukovansky, and teacher, Carolyn Welty, were instrumental in supporting this fundraiser.

I’d like to recognize a few different sets of parents who have volunteered to coordinate enriching activities for our students at Westside Elementary. Parents, Diane Hopster and Derek McNamara, coached the Robotic Catfishes 2.0 Lego robotics team of fourth and fifth grade students. This team won the research project design and presentation with their hydro dynamics project during the First Lego League qualifying tournament at Hood River Middle School in December. Parents, Mathea Valentine and Danica Harjo, coordinated The Oregon Battle of the Books at Westside this school year and facilitated the District Invitational this past weekend at Hood River Middle School. A lot of effort was put forth by these ladies for a really positive event that encourages and engages students in reading. Pictures of our Robotic Catfishes 2.0 Lego robotics team and the Westside OBOB teams are included in this newsletter.

While the parents mentioned above dedicated a tremendous amount of time and energy to coach and coordinate these activities and teams with Westside students, know that voluntarism can come in many different shapes and forms. If you have an interest in volunteering at Westside, reach out to your child’s teacher or to the front office and ask how you can support our students and school. Voluntarism is a very rewarding experience and the contributions you make have a great impact.

Thank you for your continued support!

    Bill Newton
