School Closures and Delays
Each winter, we can expect weather will affect safe travel. Our first concern is the safety of our students and staff, so when safe travel is in question, we take steps to assess weather and road conditions. We then communicate schedule changes based on inclement weather to staff and students’ families.
Be the First to Hear About Inclement Weather Delays and Closures
- We will deliver a phone call to all parents/guardians of Hood River County students when a decision has been made for a delay, cancellation, or early dismissal. In the event of a delay or cancellation, this message will likely get sent before 6 am, so if you’re not an early riser, we recommend turning your phone to silent.

Heading into winter weather, the most important action Hood River County families can take is to update their contact information. If you believe your phone number, email address, or other forms of contact could be out of date, please contact your school and update it.
Understand How Snow-Day Decisions Are Made
Our school buses are well-equipped for winter roads and our drivers are trained to drive in all kinds of weather. Even still, there are days where schools will need to close early, operate on a delayed schedule, or be cancelled altogether.
In the event that schools remain open on a day where you or your student does not feel safe to drive, we encourage you to use our bus transportation. Snow day decisions are largely made based on our buses’ ability to operate safely.
Here is a brief overview of the typical process that leads to a decision to delay, cancel or operate typically.
- Starting before 4am, our superintendent and operations director travel along bus routes to assess road conditions.
- By 4 am, the operations director and superintendent connect to determine whether or not school district facilities staff will need to clear parking lots or if road crews need to give attention to particular areas.
- Just after 5 am, HRCSD will communicate any inclement weather decisions that impact class schedules or bus routes to all staff and families.
Members of our administrative team have strong relationships with the government agencies that maintain roads in Hood River County. This enables us to keep schools open and limit disruption to instruction whenever possible.
Why is _______ school closed when there isn’t much snow here?
Every school in our district feeds into one high school. If roads in the south part of our county are impassable while roads in the north are clear, we will not operate the high school and leave some students behind in the curriculum. Most weather decisions will be made from a countywide perspective though there are rare instances when individual schools might operate on different schedules.
What if I don’t feel safe about sending my child to school when the district remains open?
Road conditions do vary from place to place in the county. We urge students to take the bus, - especially in poor weather conditions - as they are well equipped and our drivers are well-trained. Some days, parents may still wish to keep their students at home because of bad weather. Students may make up missed assignments and parents must provide a written excuse when the student arrives at school.
What do I need to consider when there is an early release?
Parents must have child care arrangements when school starts late or closes early. Please be sure your child and school know about these arrangements.
