School board approves increased compensation for certain substitute positions
Hood River County School District frequently needs substitutes for a variety of positions, including classroom assistants, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, and custodians. As of Nov. 1, the district is offering a new pay scale for these positions, ranging from $11.00 to $16.06. Unlike classroom teacher substitutes, licensing is not required as a prerequisite for these positions. The minimum requirement is a high school diploma or GED.
“We’re optimistic that this new pay range for classified substitute positions will open doors for more candidates, and we are thankful to our board of directors for supporting the change,” says Catherine Dalbey, human resources director. “We hope the pay, coupled with a ‘No Fee November’ special will encourage more people in our community to explore substitute opportunities in our schools.”
As an additional incentive to attract substitute candidates, the district is paying the $59.00 fingerprinting fee typically covered by substitute candidates. “No Fee November” is a special that will run throughout the month.
“Our schools need to fill approximately 10 to 15 substitute positions every day, not including classroom teachers,” says Dalbey. “We are also hopeful this will be an opportunity to educate our community about the wide range of positions and skills our schools employ.”
