Nationwide trend of threats in schools on social media
Hood River County School District (HRCSD) has been made aware of another nationwide trend where students post a threat regarding gun violence in schools on social media. HRCSD and the Hood River County Sheriff's Office have not received reports related to these threats.
Law enforcement believes this trend originated with TikTok, but it has been seen on Instagram and Facebook, too. Specifically, the viral threat focuses on a shooting at a school on Friday, Dec. 17.
Multiple outlets stated the original threat started off as a way for students to skip school or be excused from school and has morphed into something much more disturbing.
Again, HRCSD has not received reports related to these threats. If reports are made, each report will be taken seriously and involve law enforcement to help investigate each situation. If you know of any specific threats or witness any suspicious activity, please reach out to law enforcement or school administration immediately.
The school district wants to remind all students and parents/guardians when they hear of a threat to report it. Please do not repost it. Reposting a threat serves no purpose other than adding to the fear and uncertainty of the situation. As a reminder, if a student is caught making a violent threat on social media or causing a disturbance in school, that student will face school consequences and potential criminal charges.
