Tips for upcoming parent/teacher conferences

In the fall, our schools organize parent/teacher conferences. At these conferences, parents/caregivers can expect a two-way conversation, an emphasis on learning, and a discussion on strengths and challenges. When parents/caregivers meet with their student's teacher(s), we suggest they consider the following tips and ask the following questions.

Progress: Find out how your student is doing by asking questions such as is my student performing at grade level? How is my student doing compared to the rest of the class? What do you see as my student's strengths? How could my student improve in your class?

Assignments and assessments: Ask how the teacher gives grades. Tell the teacher what you think your student is good at. Explain what your students needs more help with.

Support learning at home: Ask what you can do at home to help your student learn. Ask if the teacher knows of other programs or services in the community that could also help your student.

Support learning at school: Find out what services are available at the school to help your students.

BE HEARD! Keep these principles in mind for a great parent–teacher conference:

  • Best intentions assumed
  • Emphasis on learning
  • Home–school collaboration
  • Examples and evidence
  • Active listening
  • Respect for all
  • Dedication to follow-up
