Hood River County School District welcomes permanent superintendent

Hood River County School District (HRCSD) is pleased to announce Bill Newton's appointment as the permanent superintendent, pending ratification at a future school board meeting.

After a thorough and inclusive selection process facilitated by the Oregon School Board Association (OSBA), the school board chose Bill Newton to lead HRCSD into its next chapter of excellence in education.

The school board prioritized ensuring that the voices of the community and district partners were heard and valued. Digital surveys were conducted to gauge the qualities desired in the next superintendent, followed by in-person focus groups with staff, high school students, and community members. These interactions provided insight into the qualifications and skills essential for the school district's leader.

Furthermore, the school board organized forums where the two finalist candidates had the opportunity to present themselves and address critical topics such as budget management, addressing achievement gaps, and promoting mental health and wellness within schools.

The application screening committee included licensed, confidential, and classified staff members, administrators, parents/guardians, and community members.

Bill Newton brings a wealth of experience to his new role as superintendent. Having served as the interim superintendent for the current school year, his leadership has already positively impacted the school district. Before his interim position, Newton served as the curriculum and instruction coordinator, demonstrating his commitment to academic excellence. His extensive background as a principal and educator, both locally and internationally, uniquely positions him to understand and address the diverse needs of Hood River County students and the community.

“As superintendent, I am committed to fostering strong collaboration with staff and partnering closely with families to ensure every student receives the support they need to graduate with the knowledge and courage to learn, serve, and pursue their dreams," said Newton.

Newton holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Oregon State College and a Master of Science degree from Portland State University. He has also completed the Oregon Continuing Administrative License Program at Portland State University, showcasing his dedication to professional growth and development.

“We extend our warmest congratulations to Bill Newton on his appointment as the Hood River County School District superintendent as we look forward to the next phase of our journey,” said Chrissy Reitz, HRCSD school board chair. “Together, with the continued support of our community, we are confident in our ability to foster a nurturing and enriching environment where every student can thrive.”
