Principal's Message

  • Dear Parents,

Since our last newsletter, a lot has happened at Westside that I want to bring you up to speed on. First, I’d like to recognize our PTO for their support of three events over the last couple of months. Each grade level worked with our artist in residence, Courtney Berens, for five to six sessions, learning about the elements of art, how to work with clay and creating a masterpiece they get to bring home to you. You will love their creations and it will be something you’ll want to hang onto forever. This opportunity is funded because of the PTO coordinated Chair Affair auction in the fall. Our school also had some guests at Westside, compliments of the PTO. We had the Jefferson Dancers, from Jefferson High School in Portland perform for our student body in February. They are amazing dancers and they help bring a little culture and creative choreography to share with our school. Then just a few weeks back we had We Care Sports spend the day at Westside where students got to play during their specials time, focusing on teamwork. We then capped off the day with a Family Fun Night where we had a gym full of students playing different games with their parents. My hat is off to our PTO for supporting these special events and to all of you for supporting our PTO via different fundraisers.

Read Across America Week was also a huge success and a great way to recognize Dr. Seuss’ birthday while building school spirit. Dress up days were held throughout the week that the majority of students participated in and students were recognized for their efforts to read with book giveaways throughout the week. It was a fun week that emphasized the love of books and reading.

In closing, with spring bringing about warmer weather, more and more students will be walking and riding their bikes and scooters to school.  Please take a moment to review with your child(ren) the Safe Routes to School Tip Sheet that is included in this newsletter.

Thank you for supporting Westside Elementary!

    Sincerely,

    Bill Newton
